about

This is a solo handpan composition entitled "Lights Out". The song is inspired the imagery of 'winding down' after a big day - closing your eyes as you fall asleep, detaching yourself from the challenges you're facing and accepting that tomorrow is a new day that starts with a clean slate.

This piece is also inspired by Kate Yates - a patient I met while performing as part of the Stairwell Project (a music therapy initiative) at the Royal Brisbane & Women's Hospital. Sitting a metre away from me as I played the pan in the Oncology Outpatients ward, she closed her eyes and was immediately transported by the sound of the handpan. At that moment I thought to myself, "What does she need to hear right now... musically what can I play to give her some comfort and relief, and take her away from the pain and challenges she's facing." So I slowed the tempo down, played more simple and came up with an ostinato. This later developed into the full piece you hear - Lights Out.
