about

Lights Out is a solo handpan composition inspired
by Kate, a patient I met while performing as part
of the Stairwell Project at the Royal Brisbane &
Women’s Hospital. I was playing handpan in the
waiting area of one of the oncology departments
when Kate walked past and sat down just a
metre away from me. She closed her eyes as I
continued to play, and in that moment I could
feel that she was immediately transported by the
sound of the handpan.

Playing in this part of the hospital is difficult
because it’s such a delicate space emotionally;
Kate made me deeper realise that every note I
play matters because my presence is affecting
patients’ lives and the way they’re feeling in that
very moment. So I thought to myself, “What does
she need to hear right now? What can I play to
give her some comfort and relief, and take her
away from the pain and challenges she’s facing.”
So I slowed the tempo down, played simpler
and meditated on a repeated idea, which I later
developed into the full piece you hear.

In Kate’s words:

"The day I moved closer at every opportunity to you as
you played the handpan Lachlan… I was so desperate
for respite; I certainly got that and more. As my eyes
closed and your music danced in my heart, I was truly
dancing with each beautiful tone that was produced
by the instrument and artist. I passionately believe
in the power of music and know it helps as much as
any medicine taken. Thank you to all the [Stairwell
Project] musicians who take time out of your busy
lives and give so much. I want to thank you all from
the bottom of my heart."
---

I’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to Peter Breen (the
curator of the Stairwell Project) because this chance
meeting with Kate wouldn’t have been possible without
you; your vision and perseverance with the program is
seemingly limitless. You are a great leader and friend
– I feel so grateful to have crossed paths with you.
