about

No Enemy Within is inspired by the words of one
of my heroes Les Brown, who quoted the following
African proverb: “Where there is no enemy within,
the enemy outside can do us no harm.”

As I mentioned, these words deeply resonate with
me because they speak of the internal dialogue we
often have with ourselves and the need for us to
have self-acceptance, inner strength and resilience
now more than ever.

I have battled with high self-expectations and
moments of self-deprecation throughout my career
to date, and I’m sure there are many others out
there who face a daily battle with negative self-talk
and what’s known as the ‘inner critic’ or the ‘little
voice’. This song is about recognising and accepting
that fear and anxiety exists. Above all, though, it
represents the notion that we are stronger than
that little voice that says “you’re not good enough”,
“you’re not brave enough”, or “what makes you think
you can do this?”, and we have the power to choose
whether we follow that voice or rise above it.

lyrics

On the doorstep of my mind,
There are voices that always seem to rise,
Sounds are distant but loud enough to
make me listen
I feel there’s nowhere to hide

Layering whispers in my ear,
Tell me things I know I’m scared to hear
But to give in to this weaker part of me
It’s my choice, to follow or lead

It won’t shake me,
No this little voice won’t shake me
No prisoner lies inside of me
No enemy within

It won’t shake me,
No this little voice won’t shake me
No prisoner lies inside of me
No enemy within

No it won’t shake me,
No this little voice won’t shake me
No prisoner lies inside of me

No enemy within
No enemy within
No enemy within
