about

I was inspired to write this piece after Tsoof played my Saraz handpan for the first time. One the first things he played was this fantastic riff you hear throughout this piece; when I tried to the play the same riff, it just didn't sound as cool! Especially with hand drumming, Tsoof plays with all these subtle intricacies in his phrasing, dynamics, accents and ghost notes! But I thought to myself, I'm only a few little adjustments away - I'll practice this riff and I'll get it!

This story reminds me of Tony Robbins' "2mm Rule Difference", in which he explains that the difference between a successful golf shot and a terrible golf shot often depends on literally 1-2 millimetres with the angle of the club and where it meets as you strike the the ball. Musically speaking, we've taken this theme of making adjustments further by trying to get the most we can out of the one riff idea through counter melodies, displacing the riff and changing seats so we both have a turn at playing the riff (which you can't see in the audio unfortunately!). Enjoy, One Adjustment Away with Tsoof Baras.
